Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the ability to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
